Pitt Is #6 in NIH Funding

In federal FY 2023, Pitt was No. 6 among U.S. universities in National Institutes of Health funding ($658.3 million). The University was also ranked within the top 10 in 11 different fields, including psychiatry (No. 1, with more than $130 million in funding).

Pitt Rankings Rise as R&D Expands

The University rose two spots to No. 16 in the Higher Education Research and Development (HERD) Survey.

Pitt is ranked #16 out of 900 institutions for research and development expenditures

Between Fiscal Years 2021 and 2022, Pitt’s total R&D expenditures grew from $1.14 billion to $1.25 billion—that’s $116.6 million, a 10.3% increase.

16.5% Growth in Industry-Sponsored Research

Industry-sponsored research agreements are up from $44.9 million in FY23 to $52.3 million in FY24.

Pitt Sees Sevenfold Increase in National Academy Membership

In FY24, seven members of the University community were elected to:

  • American Academy of Arts and Sciences
  • National Academy of Engineering
  • National Academy of Sciences

Pitt Climbed Two Spots in National Patent Rankings

Pitt ranked No. 14 among U.S. universities granted utility patents in 2023, up two spots from No. 16 in 2022.

The number of patents the University was granted increased by 8.5% over last year.
