Chancellor's Message

Portrait of Chancellor Joan Gabel

Dear Pitt community,

Over the first year of the Plan for Pitt 2028, we took important steps together in support of our students, our scholarship and our community, during what has been a challenging time for higher education. In no way minimizing those challenges, this report aims to highlight how our shared effort and a focus on our mission have led to measurable impact across our campuses, the commonwealth and beyond.

There is so much to be proud of in these pages. We welcomed the largest first-year class in Pitt history this fall, while also graduating a record class last spring into a workforce where we are a national leader for job placement. We also launched innovative programs like Pitt.INC and Pitt EDGE, set new highs for invention disclosures, and solidified our status as a top 20 most innovative university in the U.S. for research, patents and startups. Our students, faculty and staff were recognized nationally and internationally. And we came together as a university community to elevate our commitment to free speech and civil discourse through the Year of Discourse and Dialogue, as well as through our participation in the Institute for Citizens & Scholars’ Campuswide Immersion Pilot. Among these and countless other efforts, I hope that you see yourself and your contributions to the University’s progress reflected here.

In this spirit, I want to extend my sincere appreciation to every member of the Pitt community for navigating through uncertainty toward undeniable achievement. It is because of you that it is uniquely possible at Pitt. And I look forward, with appreciation, to all that we will accomplish together in the year ahead.

Hail to Possible and Hail to Pitt!
