We rose from No. 20 to No. 17 for number of startups nationwide, according to the Association of University Technology Managers’ 2024 Licensing Survey.
In the last five years, our groundbreaking discoveries resulted in more than 65 business ventures, including 15 in Fiscal Year 2025 alone—and that’s only the start.

Invention disclosures represent the first steps in transforming ideas into commercial success. In FY25, we increased our number of invention disclosures from 348 (FY24) to a record 444—50 more than the previous high.
The 102 utility patents awarded to Pitt researchers in calendar year 2024 are catalyzing imagination into impactful real-world products and services that address the most pressing challenges facing our commonwealth and society.
