The Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg University Chair is supported by a $2.5 million gift from members of the University of Pittsburgh Board of Trustees, Pitt alumni, and friends of the University. Establishment of the chair celebrates a decade of dramatic progress under Chancellor Nordenberg’s leadership. The chair will exist in perpetuity to advance faculty excellence at the University of Pittsburgh. More

Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award, University of Pittsburgh, 1985

Chancellor Nordenberg received the University-wide Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award from the University of Pittsburgh for excellence in teaching. The award is presented annually to faculty members who fulfill the University’s mission to provide high-quality undergraduate and graduate programs in the arts and sciences and professional fields. Distinguished teaching implies sustained commitment, effectiveness in helping students achieve meaningful goals, and overall teaching excellence.

Excellence-in-Teaching Award, University of Pittsburgh School of Law, 1984

Chancellor Nordenberg was the first recipient of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law’s Excellence-in-Teaching Award. Each year, members of the law school’s graduating class select a professor they feel is most deserving of the award, which is presented during the law school’s commencement ceremony. The Student Bar Association administers the election process.

Professional Honors
Presidential Leadership Award, the Gordie Foundation and Outside the Classroom, 2009

The Gordie Foundation and Outside the Classroom named Chancellor Nordenberg the 2009 recipient of the prestigious Presidential Leadership Award, recognizing his success in promoting a vibrant intellectual and social campus climate at Pitt that de-emphasizes the role of alcohol. The award included a $50,000 donation to the University in the name of Chancellor Nordenberg.

History Makers Award (Education), 2009

Chancellor Nordenberg was among the seven Pittsburgh leaders who were recognized for their exceptional contributions—in a variety of disciplines—to Western Pennsylvania, the nation, and the world as part of the Senator John Heinz History Center's 17th annual History Makers Awards Dinner on April 17, 2009.

Homer S. Brown Law Association Spirit Award, 2009

The Homer S. Brown Law Association (HSBLA) is Western Pennsylvania's primarily African American law association that works to advance the legal profession and to increase the level of diversity among Allegheny County lawyers. Recipients of the HSBLA Spirit Award are individuals and organizations that consistently have exhibited a willingness to advance and empower the African American community through dedicated service.

Bnai Zion Humanitarian Award, Bnai Zion Foundation, Pittsburgh Region, 2008

Bnai Zion is a membership organization dedicated to assisting those in need with humanitarian projects in both Israel and America. Chancellor Nordenberg was chosen to receive the award for his exemplary leadership in the Pittsburgh region.

Kesher Award, Edward and Rose Berman Hillel Jewish University Center, 2006

Chancellor Nordenberg shared this honor with Carnegie Mellon University President Jared Cohon. The award honored the efforts of both Pitt and Carnegie Mellon in working with the Hillel Jewish University Center’s student leadership to support vibrant and diverse campus communities for all students.

Nellie Award, Three Rivers Youth, 2006

Three Rivers Youth is a charitable agency that provides services to abused, neglected, runaway, and homeless youth. The private nonprofit recently celebrated 125 years of working with families. Chancellor Nordenberg was among community leaders honored for their work helping at-risk youth and families in the Greater Pittsburgh area.

Chief Executive Leadership Award, Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District II, 2006

Chancellor Nordenberg was recognized for leading the University’s $1 billion fund-raising campaign, overseeing its advances in undergraduate education, and expanding its successful community and economic development partnerships. More

Person of Vision Award, Pittsburgh Vision Services, 2003

Chancellor Nordenberg shared this honor with Carnegie Mellon University President Jared Cohon. The award is presently annually to individuals whose vision has made a difference in the quality of life in the Pittsburgh region.

Pittsburgher of the Year, Pittsburgh Magazine, 2001

Chancellor Nordenberg shared this honor with Carnegie Mellon University President Jared Cohon. The award recognizes the cooperative accomplishments of Chancellor Nordenberg and President Cohon in regional development initiatives, including their joint leadership in the Pittsburgh BioVenture/Life Sciences Greenhouse effort and the Pittsburgh Digital Greenhouse.

Pittsburgher of the Year, Pittsburgh Magazine, 1999

Chancellor Nordenberg was selected as Pittsburgher of the Year for his role as a policymaker and champion of regionalism.

Person of the Year, Vectors Pittsburgh, 1998

Chancellor Nordenberg was selected as Pittsburgh’s Person of the Year based upon a poll of 1,800 corporate and civic leaders.
